DONATIONS TO HUNTER’S POINT 
The recent purchase of what is now known as Grant Township’s Hunter’s Point Park was made possible by the support of the thousands of families and individuals who have visited Copper Harbor and Hunter’s Point and developed a strong attachment for Hunter’s Point. 

During the first fund drive we were frequently asked why we didn’t purchase more property.  The controlling factor was the amount of money required for the local match.  We felt we could raise $195,000 and, over 3 years, we were successful.

In April of 2007 Grant Township submitted a grant request to the Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund for assistance in purchasing an additional 122 acres to add to the first Hunter’s Point purchase. It is a 2.4 million dollar project that includes a 1.4 million dollar grant and an $800,000 local match. We were able to do this because the local match was made up of a donation of $600,000 by an anonymous donor and a $200,000 land donation by the owners of the property. We received word that the Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund Board accepted our grant request at their December 2007 meeting.

In keeping with our past practice, we will pay for the costs associated with acquiring the additional 122 acres without using Grant Township Funds. This includes the cost of the grant application, required appraisals, recording fees and other closing costs. We set of goal of $50,000 and have reached that goal.

However, we have found that many of our supporters still want to continue to contribute to the preservation and maintenance of Hunter’s Point. Others wish to make memorial contributions and have an individuals name listed on our Memorial Web Page. We will continue to accept donations to Hunter’s Point. These donations will be dedicated to Hunter’s Point Land Stewardship programs.
