(Copper Harbor, Michigan) Grant Township, one of Michigan's smallest Townships, efforts to preserve a 9.2 acre section of land in the Keweenaw Peninsula along Lake Superior, called Hunter's Point, has received a major grant from The Izaak Walton League Endowment, according to Richard Powers.
"The grant in the amount of $10,000 - was bestowed upon the application of the Michigan Division of The Izaak Walton League," according to Division President E. John Trimberger, and was confirmed by League Endowment treasurer Bill Weber who praised the group for "
their energetic efforts to save a small but extraordinarily beautiful and environmentally important piece of land."
Mr. Trimberger and Mr. Weber are residents of the Rockford area.
In thanking The Endowment for their support, Mr. Powers said he was "
gratified and grateful that a major American conservation organization has seen fit to come to our assistance."
He explained that "Hunter's Point includes 4800 feet along Lake Superior and Copper Harbor and can only be described as a gem which should be maintained in its natural, unspoiled state for those who will visit in the years to come.
"It has massive and beautiful rock formations, migratory birds, wildflowers of many varieties and evergreens
it should be preserved at all costs and we may yet be able to do this with the help of The Endowment, the Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund, the private owners of the land, and additional public and private support."
Mr. Powers also praised the efforts of long time Copper Harbor resident Rich Jamsen for his efforts in obtaining the grant from the Izaak Walton League. He said "Rich has pursed this grant for over a year. It took many phone calls and a trip to a TV recording session in Ohio before the award was made. We are extremely grateful to Rich for all his efforts".
