BOARDWALK
As many of you know the State of Michigan had placed a moratorium on grants for a good portion of 2007 and we were unable to begin the engineering work for our boardwalk/viewing deck project. We now have the approval to proceed with the engineering and it is our plan to take bids and begin construction in the spring of 2008. The $70,000 project will be handicapped accessible and will include the boardwalk, viewing deck, informational kiosk and rest room.
HUNTER’S POINT PHASE 2 LAND ACQUISITION
We are very pleased to announce that the Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund Board has accepted our grant request for assistance in adding 122 acres to Hunter’s Point Park. It is a $2,200,000 project consisting of a $1,400,000 grant and an $800,000 local match. The local match consists of a $600,000 gift and the balance in a land donation by the owners. The grant is a ”Phased Project” meaning that the grant will be spread over two years with the purchase completed sometime in 2009.
The purchase includes 49± acres immediately adjacent to Hunter’s Point Park. The purchase extends from the western border of Hunter’s Point Park west to North Coast Shores Road and from Lake Superior (link to Figure 5a) to Hwy. M-26. Also included in the proposed purchase are 73± acres on the north side of Brockway Mountain directly south of the Copper Harbor Marina and Hunter’s Point extending from Hwy M-26 south to the Michigan Nature Association’s James Dorian Rooks Memorial Nature Preserve (link to Figure 6).
The 49 acre portion of the purchase will link Hunter’s Point Park to the Copper Harbor Marina and will assure future public access from the Marina to Hunter’s Point via the trail which runs from the Marina to Hunter’s Point Park. The Brockway Mountain portion will link the Keweenaw Mountain Lodge and the Michigan Nature Association James Dorian Rooks Memorial Nature Preserve trail systems with Hunter’s Point Park.
The Hunter’s Point Committee, assisted by the Copper Harbor Improvement Association, conducted a fund drive to raise $50,000 to cover the cost of the grant application, appraisals, and closing costs. To date we have received donations from over 270 individuals from 25 states totaling over $51,000. We are very grateful for the support we continue to receive.
Sincerely,
Richard Powers, Deputy Supervisor
